Caroline knows how to use her voice and she is not shy about it. She spent the afternoon of her 1st birthday party carrying around a water bottle and babbling at the top of her little lungs. We hear a lot of “da da da da da da das” as she wanders in and out of each room in our house finding new objects and giving them new “homes,” i.e. wherever she discards them! But this confident babbling has not had any meaning…until this weekend.
On our last visit to Pittsburgh, we took Caroline to the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum. After a fun morning there, we purchased the cutest little, wooden, yellow bus in the gift shop. Little did we know, this bus would be a HUGE hit with Caroline.
The past few weeks Caroline has pushed her yellow bus all over our house. If asked to retrieve her bus, she will bring it to you. Perhaps playing fetch with Emmet has been too ingrained in us? Oops! Bottom line, Caroline loves this bus.
While raiding the pantry on Saturday, we heard a lot of “Aaaaaahhhh” sounds from C. And then came the sound “sssssss.” A new sound from our sweet babe. Well, individually, these sounds don’t mean a lot.
However, on Sunday, the game changed. We asked Caroline to find her bus and of course she did. When we asked her what she was holding, she said “Aaaaaahhhhsssssss” and was so darn proud of herself. Greg and I looked at each other and didn’t quite know whether to be proud or bust out laughing. As a former teacher and pretty straight-laced individual, I’m pretty mortified that our daughter’s first word was also the not-so-nice name of a donkey.
Well, note to self: teach Caroline her ‘b’sounds.
