When your Mom is a math teacher, you receive awesome onesies like this for your daughter:
Last spring, my Mom went to the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) Conference. She and some fellow teachers presented a session on fun programs to help students review material before taking standardized tests. While at the conference, my Mom also met Dr. Rebecca Klemm, The Numbers Lady, of Numbers Alive!. Since then, I have spoken to Dr. Klemm and she is an innovative educator with great ideas and a love of learning.
Numbers Alive! is a wonderful company that provides resources to make math fun and interesting for kids. On their website, there are ideas for teachers and a section called “Team Ten,” which tells a story about each number 0-9.
Caroline has a set of the Small Plush Numbers from Numbers Alive! that live on our refrigerator. The magnets are sewn into the numbers so they are safe and educational. I love that each of the numbers has a face! Caroline and her friends L.O.V.E. to play with the numbers, take them off the fridge and put them back, and carry them around the house. Of course, they will be great tools as Caroline starts to count too!
On Caroline’s bookshelf, we also have the book Numbers Alive! Books for Young Travelers: Washington, D.C. This is a great book that talks about numbers and includes facts about the Nation’s Capital. The images on each page are playful and interesting!
