Cooking with Caroline

Usually when I'm getting dinner ready, Caroline is right here...

...watching the television and listening to The Wiggles' "Do the Propeller!" or Barney's "Clean Up Song." I still have a love/hate relationship with the idea of baby TV, but when the oven is on or there is a hot pan on the stove, I am definitely okay with it.

A few days ago, I had gone to Trader Joe's and had gotten the ingredients to make homemade pizza. We love buying our pizza dough there because the dough is prepared and it has risen, but it hasn't been cooked yet like a Boboli crust that you buy at the grocery store.

When it came time to make the pizza, it dawned on me that Caroline could help me put the pizza together! There are a lot of really good cooks in my family and cooking is a fun activity that we like to do together. While Caroline and I aren't necessarily sharing recipes at the age of 19 months just yet, I thought she would have fun helping in the kitchen...and I was right!

In order for her to help me in the kitchen, there was some additional prep work...

I rolled out the dough, cut the basil, and got out the other ingredients ahead of time. Caroline's jobs were to help spread the sauce, place the basil, and layer the cheese. Of course, we started the whole culinary experience with hand washing and putting on our aprons...

Thanks to my aunt for C's adorable apron!

The following 15 minutes looked like this...

Caroline was very focused and meticulous while she was making the pizza and she loved eating it when it was time for dinner! Even the next day when we were enjoying the leftovers, we "talked" in 19 month old speak about how Caroline spread the sauce and sprinkled the cheese. Having Caroline help me did take a little bit more time and it was messier in the kitchen than usual, but it was definitely worth it!
